Mucin glucoprotein is a sialyl Lewisa structure which is synthesized from type 1 blood group precursor chains and is present in individuals expressing the Lewisa and/or Lewisb blood group antigens. In normal tissues, sialyl Lewisa antigen is present in ductal epithelium of the breast, kidney, salivary gland, and sweat glands. Its expression is greatly enhanced in serum as well as in the majority of tumor cells in gastrointestinal (GI) carcinomas.

Clone: SMP110
Isotype: IgG1/kappa
Immunogen: Human purified CA 19-9.
Staining pattern: Cytoplasmic.
Positive control: Tissue sample from colon carcinoma.

This antibody is designed for the specific localization of human CA 19-9 using IHC techniques in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections.
The detection of this antigen is useful as serum marker in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal tumors, including gastric adenocarcinoma, colorectal, liver, ovarian and biliary tree although its maximum sensitivity as a marker appears in the pancreatic excretory duct adenocarcinoma. In this tumor, the expression of this antigen demonstrated by IHC correlates with cell differentiation, being more intense immunostaining in differentiated lesions. Except as cell lineage marker, the clinical and prognostic significance of the expression of CA 19.9 in adenocarcinomas than those of pancreatic origin remains to be demonstrated.
