Alpha-fetoprotein is a glycoprotein (70 kDa) containing 590 residues. It´s a single polypeptide chain composed of three repeated domains and structurally related to albumin. This antibody can vividly stain normal tissue of fetal liver, gastrointestinal tract and placenta samples. In fetal liver, the amount of this protein decreases with the gestational status progression.
Alpha-fetoprotein is expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma and several gonadal and extragonadal tumors. This protein is considered as a biomarker for histogenesis hepatocellular, showing a staining between 12-50% and 55-100% of hepatomas in different embryonic sac tumors. The staining pattern suggests that the expression of alpha-fetoprotein is heterogeneously distributed.

Isotype: IgG
Immunogen: Human alpha-fetoprotein purified from human cord serum.
Staining pattern: Cytoplasmic.
Positive control: Tissue sample from fetal liver or hepatocellular CA.

This antibody is designed for the specific localization of human alphafetoprotein using IHC techniques in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections.
This antibody can be used in combination with placental alkaline phosphatase, as the latter stains most of seminomas, showing immunoreactivity up to 90% of the tumors. A faint staining for placental alkaline phosphatase can appear in other germinal tumors of diverse histological types (embryonal tumors, choriocarcinoma). Along with chorionic gonadotropin, this antibody may be useful to identify poorly differentiated carcinomas or germ gonadal origin.
